Innovation is described as the generation of fresh ideas, the ongoing development of products, services and processes that can lead to significant improvements in the way businesses operate.

Local sisters Tracey and Genevieve Rohr have taken an innovative approach to running their business the Bacio Café in Cinema Walk Arcade.

“We’re open late at night to cater for locals who want an alcohol fee place to socialise with a strict no violence policy,” said Tracey.

“We want to change the culture of this community.”

The girls hand out Band-Aids and hydrolyte, and arrange for taxis for any passers-by that have been to the local pubs.

“We’re all about community spirit and want to make a difference, rather than focussing solely on making a profit,” comments Genevieve.

“We want to create jobs for people with disabilities. This is something that we are very passionate about.”

Bacio Café is open from 9pm to 3:30am Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Normal café hours are Monday to Friday, 5:30am to 3:30pm.

The business has received support from local Business Advisor Fiona Barden.

“This is a fantastic concept and I look forward to watching it develop further,” Ms Barden said.

Ms Barden shares her tips for being innovative in your business:

  • Create a culture of innovation in your business by encouraging ideas from your employees and consumers on a regular basis.
  • Research your market and your customers; find out what products or services they want and what they currently cannot get.
  • Study the market to spot existing trends and target any that can be exploited.
  • Review your existing processes to see if there is anything you could do better.
