Manufacturer wins ETC Employer Award

Taree manufacturer G James Glass & Aluminium has been named ETC’s July Employer of the Month.  The award comes after the company recently provided the opportunity for four young job seekers to gain experience by working in the factory through the PaTH Internship Program, also for the placement of two employees into formal apprenticeships.

G. James Glass & Aluminium produces a broad range of glass and aluminium products from over 50 locations nationally and has Window and Door Fabrication branches in 23 locations.

Taree branch manager John Pavey was a little lost for words when told of the award.  “Quite simply, we are looking to grow our business and we approached ETC because we need a recruitment partner to help us find good candidates,” said Mr Pavey.

“The past 12 months has been our best financial year to date. We have high service levels and a large number of repeat customers.”  And according to Mr Pavey the next 12 months will also be about growth.  Plans are underway for a large factory expansion in Taree which will see the current facility double in size.

Mr Pavey said that screening for good candidates remains one of the biggest challenges and this is where the PaTH program comes into its own by providing a more flexible approach for employers such as G. James Glass & Aluminium.

”You don’t often get the opportunity to trial people and that is the benefit of the PaTH Program. It gives the employer time to see how the intern will work in the environment and fit into the work culture,” said Mr Pavey.  “It helps to determine whether we will offer them further work opportunities.”

At the same time, PaTH allows the intern the opportunity to learn a set of new skills while exploring their own career pathway.

Mr Pavey appreciates the support he has received from local ETC staff.  “It’s good having a single point of contact.  Our expansion is expected to get underway within the next 6 months, and once completed, we will be looking to recruit another 10-12 staff.”

The PaTH Program is designed to support young people to gain the skills and work experience they need to get a job. It also provides a financial incentive to employers who host an internship.
