A new skills development program designed for people living with disabilities is being rolled out in the Tweed Heads region.

An initiative of Multicap, the Get Ready for Work Program is designed to support 9 Tweed locals over 16 weeks to develop employment skills, identify their career interests and strengths, and to connect with technology.

Service Manager for Multicap Gold Coast and Northern New South Wales, Charles Bond said there was a strong need for the program.

“I believe this new Program will fill a major gap for people living with disabilities to assist them in their journey into employment,” he said.

An $18,000 injection from the ETC Community Support Fund helped Multicap to get the new Program off the ground.

“Without the ETC grant, this wouldn’t have been possible. We’ve been able to purchase an interactive LED Touchscreen Smartboard and resources, plus promote the program and cover staff salaries,” Mr Bond said.

According to Mr Bond, the new interactive Smartboard was an integral part to the Program.

“Most of our clients don’t have access to internet facilities where they live or they’ve never even experienced technology” he said.

“The Smartboard will provide a way for them to interact, write CV’s and cover letters, conduct research and acquire basic skills to help them eventually find a job. We’ll show them around the internet and how to search for jobs, in a supported environment where everyone can learn together.”

ETC Director Isabelle Borelli said it was a pleasure to be able to support Multicap and the Get Ready for Work Program.

“The ETC Community Support Fund is designed to help organisations reduce disadvantage, generate opportunity, increase support services and build capacity in the communities in which we operate,” Ms Borelli said.

“ETC is proud to be a not-for-profit company and we are confident the money we are donating to Multicap will help contribute to a more positive future for our community.

The next round of ETC’s Community Support Fund opens on 18 March 2019
