Residents living on Port Macquarie’s North Shore are expected to be better informed about the peculiarities of living in the area with the development of information kits to be given to all new residents.

The information kits are an initiative of the Northside Progress Association.

“The purpose of the kits is to educate new residents on flood and fire evacuation procedures, points of contact in emergency and some features about ferry protocol,” Northside Progress Association President Narelle Milligan said.

“The February 2013 flood was the worst since 1978 and resulted in thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to cars, white goods, work tools etc.

“The ferries were out for several days due to the flood and damage so food drops had to be organised for some residents.

“People who had never experienced a flood before panicked because they didn’t know what to do.”

Ms Milligan said it was hoped the information kits would not only educate newcomers about the protocols in an emergency situation, but also enhance the sense of social connectedness.

“There are about 600 residents living on the North Shore and we may have as many as 50 new residents each year,” Ms Milligan said.

Enterprise & Training Company Limited (ETC) has donated money towards the development of the information kits.

ETC’s Chairman Rod McKelvey said it was a pleasure to support the Northside Progress Association.

“The ETC Community Support Fund is designed to help organisations improve the social and economic development of local communities,” Mr McKelvey said.

“ETC is proud to be a not-for-profit company and we are confident the money we are donating will help make a more positive future for our community.

“Since 1989, ETC has placed over 51,000 Australians into jobs, trained more than 23,000 people, helped over 34,000 small businesses to start-up and grow, and contributed in excess of $25 million to the local communities in which we operate.”
