Youth Jobs PaTH is a flexible new approach to youth employment. It is designed to support young people to gain the skills and work experience they need to get and keep a job. It also supports employers to host internship placements and provides them with incentives when they take on a young person.

Coffs Harbour manufacturing company Advance Metal Industries Australia (AMIA) agreed to trial PaTH after being approached by employment service provider ETC.

“This was the first time we had ever done something like this, so we were a bit unsure at first, but it’s proving to have been a good decision,” said AMIA Training Manager Wendy Woods.

“When our intern Matthew Gledhill first started with us, he was a standout, full of appreciation, enthusiasm and self-motivation.

“It was obvious he was so thankful for the opportunity. Every day he would smile.”

Ms Woods said they we were so impressed by Matthew that they offered him an Apprenticeship as a Glazier as soon as his internship ended.

“He has sore cheeks from smiling so much when we gave him the good news,” she said.

Matthew thanked both ETC and AMIA for setting him on his career path.

“Prior to this I was studying a Certificate III in Hospitality because I thought it would help me get a job, even though working in a trade was what I really wanted to do,” he said.

“When ETC told me about the PaTH internship opportunity it sounded great – so I asked them to put my resume forward to AMIA.”

Matthew was successful for an interview with AMIA which resulted in the internship as a Trades Assistant.

“This went for 4 weeks and covered all the safety aspects of the role. Then I learned about the glazing side of things which was really interesting,” said Matthew.

“My goal was to get an Apprenticeship. It felt awesome when AMIA offered it to me – I was stoked.”

“ETC provided me with uniforms and were really helpful during the while process,” he said.
