Enterprise & Training Company (ETC) is excited to be working with Slipways Tuncurry to provide workplace based training for six local job seekers as part of ETC’s Hospitality pre-employment program.
The five week intensive training course has provided the students with valuable insight into what it’s like working in the Hospitality industry.
According to student Kylie Anderson being able to learn hands-on rather than just from a book made it much easier to understand. Ms Anderson was one of three students who secured employment as a result of the program.
“I would look at the pictures in the book and they didn’t make much sense to me until I went to Slipways and could see the machines in real life,” Ms Anderson said.
“I haven’t worked or done any training in hospitality before. It was really interesting to learn something new and I loved the barista side of things.”
The training at Slipways covered skills such as how to operate a bar, clean and tidy bar areas, prepare and serve espresso coffee, provide responsible service of alcohol and use hygiene practises for food safety.
Slipways Supervisor Alex said the program had a positive impact on their restaurant in Tuncurry.
“Even our customers liked the idea and were really supportive. They gave the students encouragement and pointers,” Alex said.
“The students improved very quickly once they got in and had a go.”
According to Alex the program was a good way to evaluate potential staff.
“It’s just like putting someone through a work trial where you can get an idea of how they work.”
ETC Regional Manager Training Ingrid Hughes said ETC was committed to working with employers to meet their needs and finding sustainable employment for local job seekers.
“These programs focus on students learning as a small group directly in industry whilst under the supervised guidance of their trainer/ coach. These programs provide students with the opportunity to “learn by doing” whilst developing strong relations with customers and other staff,” Ms Hughes said.
“All students were selected through ETC’s jobactive office in Tuncurry which is located in Manning Street.”
