Celebrate building stronger language, literacy and numeracy skills during Adult Learners Week

Wilfred’s SEE Program Success Story

After leaving school in Year 8 and spending years in physically demanding labour jobs, Wilfred found himself wanting more — not just in terms of employment, but in confidence, literacy, and life skills.

In August 2024, he joined the Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program, delivered by ETC and referred by his job provider, Tursa in Goodna, to pursue education, training, and professional development.

The ETC Goodna SEE team helps participants improve their language, literacy, numeracy, and digital skills to improve confidence and build essential foundations for future employment. Trainers work closely with learners to set personalised learning goals that reflect their individual needs and aspirations. By drawing on each participant’s life experience and work experience, the team creates engaging and relevant learning experiences that support real-world outcomes.

Catching Up and Moving Forward

For Wilfred, joining the SEE program was a chance to reconnect with learning and build the foundational skills he missed out on during school. Like many adult learners, he faced challenges in retaining information and understanding complex maths concepts.

But with tailored learning strategies, regular revision, and ongoing encouragement from his trainers, Wilfred began to retain knowledge more effectively and apply it in real-world situations.

With the support of ETC’s dedicated Training Advisors, Wilfred made significant progress in areas such as:

  • Solving complex maths problems
  • Writing well-structured texts
  • Reading with greater comprehension

He shared, “I enjoy reading books more now, as I’m able to comprehend what I read better after attending your classes. I’m able to confidently transfer my knowledge and what I learn in class to my work, which feels really good.”

Growth, Gratitude, and a New Outlook

Having previously participated in SEE training programs with other providers, he shared that he’s gained the most from the program since joining ETC. His confidence has grown, and he’s now thriving in the classroom. This is a clear example of SEE success and a testament to the power of personalised support and a nurturing learning environment.

Wilfred’s journey is a powerful reminder of how adult education can reignite confidence and unlock new possibilities.

Adult Learners Week is a time to celebrate the courage and growth of our inspiring SEE participants — individuals who return to learning later in life to build skills, confidence, and brighter futures. This story reminds us that it’s never too late to learn, and that the right support can make all the difference.

What is the SEE Program?

The SEE Program helps you build stronger reading, writing, maths and digital skills

The Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program, delivered by ETC, is an Australian Government-funded initiative designed to help eligible job seekers improve their language, literacy, numeracy (LLN), and digital skills — essential foundations for gaining meaningful employment or pursuing further education.

Participants in the SEE program receive personalised support from qualified trainers in a friendly, small-group environment. The program is designed to meet individual learning needs, whether someone is brushing up on basic maths, improving their reading comprehension, gaining computer skills or learning how to write professional emails and resumes.

SEE is especially valuable for adults who may have left school early, experienced long gaps in education, or want to build confidence in their communication and problem-solving skills. With flexible delivery options and a focus on practical, real-world applications, SEE empowers learners to take control of their future.
