Kathmandu Kitchen in Kingscliff has been announced as the Enterprise & Training Company Limited (ETC) Employer of the Month for March.
The Nepalese & Tibetan Restaurant first established in 1998 with just Karen Shrestha and her husband Shankar and has grown to now employ fourteen local staff.
Owner Karen said it had taken a long time to build up the business but appreciates the locals who have been loyal.
“We also have a fantastic team now who work from the heart and have fantastic work ethic,” Ms Shrestha said.
“We are very proud to have won awards such as the Tweed Shire Business Excellence Awards (BEATS) in both 2013 and 2015 for the Best Restaurant, and the 2015/16 Five Star ‘Scores on Doors’ Hygiene and Food Safety Rating.”
Ms Shrestha attributes their success to being consistent and passionate.
“My husband cooks with such passion and humility. You’ll get the same quality of food and service no matter which day you come,” she said.
“I also believe what makes a good employer is to be trustworthy – someone who does the right thing and really looks out for their staff. It’s important to care and I consider my staff to be like family.”
Restaurant Manager Wendy Watson joined the Kathmandu Kitchen team just a couple of months ago and is really enjoying it.
“The staff here are so easy going, Shankar and Karen are the most wonderful bosses to work for. It’s a very family orientated restaurant and the clientele we get here are very down to earth,” Ms Watson said.
Waitresses Tiani and Erin also commended their employer for being awarded as the ETC ‘Employer of the Month’.
“It’s great to work in a place that receives awards and recognition, and to be working for a place that is actively employing people and giving them opportunities,” they said.
Kathmandu Kitchen Owner Karen Shrestha said she was very impressed with the service received from ETC when she was looking for staff.
“It was very personalised. Natalie and Heather at ETC went over and above what we were expecting. When we needed to urgently replace a staff member who was leaving – they were so determined to find a suitable replacement for us. It wasn’t just a job for them. They really cared about finding the right person for us,” Ms Shrestha said.
“We’re really happy with the 3 staff we’ve hired through ETC. You can interview a lot of people and not find the right person who fits your business. Natalie and Heather really understood what I was looking for – not just the skills but the type of person.”
