Janet Griffin is setting a great example for job seekers during the Coronavirus pandemic. Even though she was getting more income from Centrelink during COVID-19, she still preferred to go and secure employment.

“Having a job makes me feel like I have a purpose and a reason to get out of bed. Plus the confidence you gain from it,” Janet said.

Janet is a 64 year old Gold Coast local who had been caring for her mother for several years on a Carers Allowance. Unfortunately due to a relationship breakdown she had to move on amidst the pandemic.

Job Search

“I was getting bored just sitting around at home and needed to put my brain to use,” she said.

With a background in Medical Administration and a strong Resume, she began looking for work locally, but with no success.

“It was hard to look for work during this time. I applied for every job that I could, but also felt that my age was detrimental,” she said.

“I had been with ETC a long time ago, so decided to return to them for some support.”

Janet worked with her Jobs Advisor at ETC to help build her confidence and job searching skills.

“Even though I had my own Resume, ETC tailored it to suit other roles that my skills could transfer over to such as customer service or sales,” she said.

Shortly after, Janet was successful in securing a job at Sundale Medical Centre as a Medical Receptionist which she absolutely loves.

“I’m so happy in my role and to be working for such a caring employer,” she said.

“When I first started, they gave me a pack which included a lovely bag, a card welcoming me to the team and a $200 Coles Myer gift card. They have also been really understanding towards my recent health issues.”

Janet said she would highly recommend ETC to anyone.

“I am so grateful for their help. They assisted me with upgrading my First Aid certificate which was a requirement of my new job. As well as a National Police Check, new pants for work and fuel vouchers,” Janet said.

ETC Business Relationship Manager for the Gold Coast Alec Betham encouraged local job seekers to seek support from their employment provider during the pandemic.

“ETC has hundreds of jobs to fill right now, in a variety of different industries. We are expecting there will be a lot more competition for these jobs once the Coronavirus Supplement and JobKeeper payments reduce. We encourage you to beat the rush, and contact your Jobs/Youth Advisor today to see how we can help you to secure your future,” Mr Betham said.
