Yes Chef is a fresh, innovative program developed by Enterprise & Training Company (ETC) and is set to tackle the industry’s skills shortage issue and bring a more personalised approach to Commercial Cookery Apprenticeships.
ETC Business Relationship Manager for Traineeships, Ingrid Johansen said the NSW 2016 Small Training Provider of the Year designed Yes Chef based on feedback from locals in the industry.
“We understand that all businesses and Apprentices are different – one size doesn’t fit all,” Ms Johansen said.
“With Yes Chef, Training and Assessment will be completed in the workplace, so we come to you. This prevents disruption to the business where normally the Apprentice would have to be sent offsite for one day of the week.”
“Also, Apprentices can start at any time with our rolling intakes.”
The Yes Chef program will provide Apprentices with a Nationally Recognised Qualification – Certificate III Commercial Cookery, with employer incentives also being available at 6 months and upon successful completion.
ETC Regional Training Manager for the Mid North Coast Ingrid Hughes said she believed industry had been waiting for this for a long time.
“Really, up until now there’s only been 1 model of training. This is going to create a lot more flexibility in industry where different workplaces can customise their learning skills to their business. And I think it’s going to be very valuable for businesses to use,” she said.
Already the program has seen positive traction with two Apprentices starting across the region.
Port Macquarie local Ben Meguyer is currently undertaking a trail with Chop and Chill in Port Macquarie with hopes to start his Apprenticeship with them.
“After injuring my hand I had to change my whole career path and re-train. So I started up ETC’s pre-Apprenticeship Certificate II Kitchen Operations course and after only ten weeks Chop and Chill offered me a trial,” Ben said.
“During the course I learned a lot of knife skills, how to make a variety of different things and basic cooking. It helped prepare me for this new job by getting the experience and qualification needed.”
