In the beautiful Northern NSW town of Lismore, local glazier Peter saw his life take an unexpected turn.
For years, he had worked as a self-employed tradesman, navigating the scenic landscapes of the Northern Rivers. This was until 2022, when a back injury abruptly halted his career, leaving him at a crossroads.
Peter embarked on an unforeseen journey, one of resilience and determination, to find employment despite his injury. Uncertain about the path ahead, he sought guidance and support.
Enter the Disability Employment Services (DES) program, delivered by ETC.
ETC’s DES program is designed to assist people with an injury, illness or disability to find sustainable and meaningful employment.
Peter was linked with ETC’s DES team in Lismore, where he met dedicated Jobs Advisor, Meagan and the local team. The support from ETC’s Lismore team became Peter’s lifeline during physiotherapy and hydrotherapy treatments. Encouragement flowed freely, keeping his spirits high.
They provided comprehensive assistance for Peter. Helping him with job applications, develop cover letters, update his resume, and address selection criteria – essential steps to stand out in the competitive job market. Moreover, they identified job openings that aligned with Peter’s abilities and aspirations.
Their approach was personalised. They tailored work, training, and ongoing support to suit Peter’s unique talents and circumstances.
Once Peter was ready, he began working with ETC Recruitment Advisor Crystal. Together they brainstormed to come up with a new career plan, and envisioned a path for him as a Bus Driver.
When positions became available at Northern Rivers Buslines, Crystal accompanied Peter on a tour. His magnetic personality and fun-loving attitude made him an ideal candidate.
However, fate had other plans. Crystal thought of a new idea. Another rewarding career path that would suit Peters caring personality.
“During our language exchange sessions— When Peter was teaching me Italian, and I was attempting to teach him Spanish—an idea blossomed. What if Peter could bring his warmth and care to Lismore Hospital? As a Food and Patient Support Worker, he could make a difference in the lives of those who needed it most,” Crystal said.
Peter agreed, and they began working towards his new goal.
His journey wasn’t without challenges, but as an ETC customer, he received preferred candidate status with HealthShare NSW. Together the whole ETC team in Lismore worked tirelessly to pave the way. And their hard work paid off.
In January 2024, Crystal received a text from Peter alongside his first payslip. His words echoed through the screen, “This is the best job I’ve ever had. Muchas Gracias!”
Crystal said this especially resonated with her because she shares the same sentiment about her role at ETC.
She continued to say, “Peter’s resilience and transformation inspired everyone involved. Sometimes detours lead to the most fulfilling destinations. His journey reminded us that every journey matters.”
Since then, Peter has even been promoted to a role that takes him from Lismore to Coffs Harbour and even to Tweed Heads, making deliveries of supplies to various hospitals in our region, while still working in the Lismore Base Hospital.
His story exemplifies how determination, support, and adaptability can turn unexpected challenges into remarkable opportunities.
Well done, Peter!
