With the hospitality and tourism industries ramping back up now COVID restrictions have eased, Gold Coast employers are on the lookout for skilled staff to join their teams.
To assist local job seekers to prepare for the workforce, ETC recently ran a WorkIT Hospitality skillset program in partnership with the popular Kurrawa Surf Club.
WorkIT, the brainchild of ETC, is a work experience program where the participants also complete units from Certificate III in Hospitality.
The program consists of three weeks of face-to-face training – broken up into one week of theory and two weeks of on-the-job training.
It helps job seekers to gain experience and confidence, while demonstrating their skills to potential employers.
Kicking off their first week, participants completed their theory components in the picturesque Kurrawa Surf Club function room, which offers sprawling 180-degree views of the ocean.
According to keen program participant Cassandra, it was a view that you couldn’t beat.
“We’ve had an ongoing relationship with ETC over the past few years, where we have completed many WorkIT programs together in our food and beverage areas,” said Kurrawa Surf Club HR Manager Mark.
“During this time we’ve retained some great staff, and have really seen the benefits of the program.”
Some of units that are covered in the Hospitality skillset program include:
This mix of units ensures participants are work ready and able to jump right into the hospitality industry.
After completing their theory work, participants are next assigned shifts in three different areas of the club – café, bar and floor.
“This gives participants exposure to all three areas to see what they like best and where they fit best in the club,” ETC Recruitment Account Manager Heidi said.
“It‘s really important for job seekers to not only gain their qualifications, but also get that real life experience working behind a bar, on the floor and making coffees.”
WorkIT Participant Cassandra said that she had always wanted to work in customer service, but felt nervous trying to find a job.
She wanted to do well, and the additional support from ETC helped build her self-confidence.
“Since starting this training my confidence has improved a lot and I just feel better as a person,” she said smiling.
