19-year-old Zachary Miller (Zach) is determined to become a Chef and buy his first home after moving from the Mid North Coast to the Red Centre of Australia through the NCAP program.
Currently working as a Kitchen Stewart at the 5 Star ‘Sails in the Desert’, Ayers Rock Resort, Zach is working hard to prove himself so he can soon commence an Apprenticeship.
After attending an information session with Voyages Indigenous Tourism just six months ago, Zach applied for work with the help of ETC’s New Careers for Aboriginal People (NCAP) Program.
“I haven’t looked back since and I’m determined to change my life for the good,” young Zach said.
Zach said prior to this he was unemployed for nearly two years and was applying for any job he could to kick start his career.
“It’s been pretty good living out here so far. It was a bit hard the first month, but once I got used to it and met some new people, it was alright. I’ve been able to meet people from all around the world here,” he said.
“It’s great now having a job and earning money. I can buy whatever I want and I’m saving a lot towards my goal of buying a home.”
Zach thanked ETC for helping him to change his life.
“They were really supportive. Jennie helped me with all the paperwork, police checks etc.”
What is Zach’s advice for other unemployed people?
“Don’t be afraid to apply anywhere, even if its 3000kms from home.”
ETC’s Aboriginal Employment Advisor Jennie Rosser said it was great to see Zachary follow his passion and thrive.
“Although he is a very shy young Aboriginal man he accepted the challenge to relocate and now wants to inspire and motivate other young Aboriginal people,” Ms Rosser said.
The New Careers for Aboriginal People (NCAP) program is funded and administered by the NSW Department of Industry, Training Services NSW, Aboriginal Services and aims to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to find work or improve their current job situation.
ETC’s NCAP Aboriginal Employment Advisors link Aboriginal people with training pathways and employment opportunities and provide practical assistance such as developing a resume or applying for a job. They have strong connections in the local community and will listen and support you to help you achieve your goals.
