A local small business has been rewarded for their environmental initiatives by winning the Excellence in Sustainability award at the recent Coffs Harbour Business Awards.
Picture Perfect Candles founder Margaret Pleysier said she is thrilled to be recognised for her passion in creating sustainable products.
“I create clean burning candles made from pure soy which are made on-site at my shop and are non-toxic to people or the environment,” Mrs Pleysier said.
“Most candles say they are made from soy although they often contain paraffin which is a toxic by-product of the diesel refinery process that stains the glass black.”
Not only are Picture Perfect Candles healthier for candle enthusiasts and the environment, the local business encourages customers to refill their existing glass jars at a fraction of the price.
“Customers can refill their empty jars with any pure soy fragrance or colour they choose,” Mrs Pleysier said.
“When planning my business, I wanted to create sustainable, non-toxic, environmentally safe products and I have achieved that which is fantastic.”
Mrs Pleysier added the support from ETC’s Small Biz Connect program was invaluable when planning her business venture.
“The personalised mentoring made me really understand my target market and helped me to write a business plan with achievable objectives,” Mrs Pleysier said.
ETC’s Small Biz Connect Business Consultant Fiona Barden said spending the time to plan, understand the financial model and test the market are essential when starting a new business.
“Business owners need to understand what their unique selling proposition is, if it meets the needs of the market and most importantly if the numbers stack up,” Mrs Barden said.
“Spending time on the basic planning process will ensure a thriving business in the long-term.”
Picture Perfect Candles are located at Shops 8-11, 9 Harbour Drive, Coffs Harbour and refills start from as little as $10.
