We are thrilled to share our recent ‘Skills on Track’ Work for the Dole project, a collaboration between ETC Kempsey and the Macleay District Motorcycle Club (MDMCC).
This initiative has not only provided valuable work experience for local job seekers but also significantly enhanced the safety and infrastructure of the Macleay District Motorcycle Club.
Current data from the Australian Government shows that construction is one of the largest employing industries across the Mid North Coast of NSW, accounting for 11.5% of employment.
This project offered a valuable entry point for its nine participants, who gained hands-on experience in fencing and using equipment such as augers, cement mixers, and Dingo machines, positioning them well for opportunities in this significant sector.
Over a span of 16 weeks, under the guidance of Supervisor Wayne Lawrence, these dedicated participants successfully constructed 380 meters of spectator fencing and 90 meters of pit fencing at MDMCC.
This has significantly benefited the Macleay Valley community by creating a safer environment for members, visitors, spectators, and riders. The new fences, which meet industry specifications, ensure that future races can be held in a secure setting.
ETC participant Reece shared his positive experience working on the project.
“I’m learning lots through this project! While I’ve done fencing before, I haven’t done this type of cyclone fencing. It’s been a positive experience, with a good team, and it has kept me ‘work fit’. After this, I aim to find full-time employment in a similar field outdoors.”
Participant Jackson added, “Since I’ve been learning how to use machinery, including the Dingo, I wouldn’t mind finding work in earthworks. The guys at ETC have been trying to get me a mechanical job, so this has been good experience.”
The ‘Skills on Track’ project exemplifies the transformative power of community collaboration. By bringing together the Macleay District Motorcycle Club and ETC, this project has not only addressed local infrastructure needs but also empowered participants through hands-on experience and skill development.
It has also boosted participants’ confidence, and enabled them to make meaningful contributions to their community, while significantly enhancing their job prospects.
Shane Gill, President of the Macleay District Motorcycle Club, expressed his gratitude for the collaboration.
“Through the collaboration of MDMCC and ETC, the Work for the Dole project replaced our old, deteriorating fence with a new, high-standard spectator and pit area fence, meeting Motorcycle Australia’s requirements.”
“We really enjoyed working with ETC and seeing their customers’ skills and confidence grow over the duration of this project. We’ve been really impressed with how quickly they learnt how to fence. The craftsmanship has been great.”
The project competition was recently celebrated with a graduation ceremony, attended by Michael Kemp, MP for Oxley, and Annette Lawrence, Kempsey Shire Councillor.
The successful completion of ‘Skills on Track’ not only highlights the dedication of ETC and MDMCC to community development but also underscores the positive impact of collaborative efforts in enhancing employability.
Here’s to empowering our community and building brighter futures together!
