Investing in Change: ETC Funds Innovative Employment Support Program for First Nations Community

At ETC, we believe in the power of collaboration and community-driven initiatives. Our commitment to building stronger communities extends beyond words—it’s woven into the fabric of our organisation.

One way we show this commitment is through the ETC Community Support fund, an initiative that has seen ETC give back over $2.5 Million to community organisations across our footprint since 2012.

Today, we’re thrilled to shine a spotlight on one of our remarkable recipients – Strong Spirit Aboriginal Services!

Nestled in the heart of the Port Macquarie Hastings region, Strong Spirit Aboriginal Services supports the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community with a variety of professional and cultural services. Their mission is to create sustainable economic and personal outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

ETC’s investment in change

We’re proud to announce that ETC has provided $30,000 in funding to Strong Spirit through the ETC Community Support Fund. An investment that will fuel the development of their innovative new Employment Support Program.

The program features cultural immersion activities such as workshops, storytelling, and community events, which aim to deepen participants’ understanding of their cultural heritage and foster pride and connection.

ETC Board Chair, Rod McKelvey, highlights the significance of this partnership.

“At ETC, we pride ourselves on partnering with like-minded organisations to build stronger communities. We are extremely proud to partner with Strong Spirit, an organisation making a significant impact on the lives of people in the region.”

“By investing in programs that address the unique challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, ETC is aiming to help to create a more equitable and prosperous future for all,” said Mr McKelvey.

Supporting First Nations participants through new Employment Support Program

Strong Spirit’s CEO, Tristram Morris, is thrilled to commence the program, which will help participants to gain confidence and skills that are directly applicable to the job market, making them more competitive candidates for employment, he explains.

“By providing culturally relevant training and support, the program aims to bridge the gap between traditional knowledge and modern employment opportunities. This holistic approach not only enhances employability but also strengthens cultural identity and community cohesion,” continues Mr Morris.

Let’s delve into the program:

  1. Licensing program: Strong Spirit recognises that access to licenses—whether for driving, vocational skills, or certifications—is a gateway to economic independence. Their licensing program will empower community members with the tools they need to secure employment.
  2. Cultural immersion: Understanding cultural context is essential for success. Strong Spirit’s cultural immersion initiatives celebrate heritage, deepen connections, and foster pride. Through workshops, storytelling, and community events, participants gain a holistic perspective that enriches their lives.
  3. Training and development: Skills are the currency of progress. The Employment Support Program will offer targeted training, equipping individuals with practical skills relevant to today’s job market. From resume building to interview techniques, Strong Spirit ensures that no one is left behind.

The heart of ETC’s Community Support Fund

The ETC Community Support Fund has a long history of backing initiatives that drive positive change. Our goal is to create pathways to employment, foster skills, and dismantle barriers.

ETC CEO, Damon Munt, explains how funding Strong Spirit’s new Employment Support Program aligns with our committed to reconciliation and closing the gap.

“This funding is part of ETC’s broader commitment to reconciliation and supporting initiatives that contribute to ‘Closing the Gap.’ By collaborating with Indigenous leaders and organisations, ETC aims to address systemic barriers and promote social and economic inclusion,” said Mr Munt.

Through our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), ETC acknowledges the past, embraces the present, and shapes a future where reconciliation is a lived reality. Our goals is to help weave a tapestry of empowerment, cultural enrichment, and opportunity for the local First Nations community.

We are proud to work alongside dedication organisations, such as Strong Spirit, to continue breaking down barriers to employment and support the local community.
