Passionate about the Hunter’s hearing health, Simone Jolly, a local audiologist, has hit the road to help the Hunter community hear better.
After noticing long wait times of up to a year for hearing tests in the public system, she developed an innovative business model to tackle this issue.
Simone created Jolly Good Hearing, a mobile hearing test service for children and a mobile earwax removal service for adults. She travels to local homes, businesses, daycare centres, nurseries, or wherever she’s needed, to support the community.
Simone said this brilliant business idea surprisingly came out of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I’m quite grateful that I had the opportunity to live through the Covid pandemic because it allowed me to do a lot of preparation and a lot of research, to figure out what it is I really want to do,” Ms Jolly said.
“It was then that I made the decision to start my own business.”
Simone’s business is a testament to the power of innovation and entrepreneurship. Her mobile hearing test service and earwax removal service are a welcome addition to the Hunter region, where long wait times for hearing tests have been a persistent problem.
A quick Google search led Ms. Jolly to ETC, a leading provider of employment, training, and business services with over 30 years of industry experience.
ETC is a not-for-profit, community-oriented company that services the Hunter region from offices in Maitland and Newcastle. Here, Ms. Jolly commenced small business training through Workforce Australia – Self Employment Assistance, with ETC Business Advisor and Hunter local Kimberlie Clare-Campbell.
“A part of my job as a Business Advisor is to help our customers tap into the knowledge and skills that they already have and to believe in themselves. I think that the belief in yourself is the key to business success,” said Ms Clare-Campbell.
Since launching her business, Simone has also enrolled into ETC’s 12-month Coaching program, where she meets regularly with her mentor to go over what’s working, what isn’t and how she can continue to grow her business.
“I love the coaching sessions. It just keeps me on track, keeps me accountable and keeps the business evolving,” said Simone.
“I get something from it every time and come away enthusiastic. Just last week I had a coaching session with Kimberlie, and we’ve come up with some fantastic future plans for Jolly Good Hearing.”
“That’s the best part of the training for me, to have somebody that I can reach out to. Just to have a sounding board to know that I’m doing the right things, and to then work together to come up with new ideas.”
