Living with mental health and medical challenges can make finding and maintaining employment seem like an impossible task… But with the right support and guidance, overcoming these barriers is achievable!
ETC’s Disability Employment Services (DES) program provides personalised support to individuals with an illness, injury or disability, helping them overcome barriers to employment and achieve their career goals.
That was certainly the case for 30-year-old Jacob, who encountered numerous obstacles on his path to employment before joining ETC’s DES Program.
When first starting with the program, Jacob was dealing with mental health and medical conditions that made his journey particularly challenging.
However, his determination to overcome these barriers and achieve his goals have been truly inspiring. His story highlights the power of resilience and the importance of having the right support system in place.
Jacob faced several hurdles at the beginning of his journey, including difficulty maintaining consistent attendance at his ETC appointments. Recognising this, his ETC Jobs Advisor, Tiarni, engaged in meaningful discussions to identify steps that would make him feel more comfortable attending his appointments and working towards his goals.
This proactive approach helped Jacob feel more confident and motivated to achieve his objectives.
Together, Tiarni and Jacob next established a goal plan, and Tiarni assisted him in booking appointments with doctors to address his mental and physical health needs.
This collaborative process allowed ETC to gain a deeper understanding of Jacob’s requirements for progressing towards employment.
After a few weeks of collaborating together, Jacob expressed an interest in pursuing a cleaning job. Tiarni knew of a suitable local cleaning position and quickly reached out on his behalf. Jacob was thrilled when he successfully secured an interview.
Great news followed shortly after—when Jacob got the job!
Once in work, ETC’s support continues through our post placement support process. We assist participants with work related items, training or support that suits their needs.
Tiarni and the local ETC team continued their support of Jacob, regularly reaching out to him to ensure he felt comfortable with the steps to employment and that he had everything he needed to start his new role.
Since then, Jacob has grown more confident in himself, demonstrating remarkable personal growth and resilience.
Tiarni said, “We are so proud of Jacob! It is wonderful to see him overcome his barriers to employment and continue to grow and thrive.”
